This needle is recommended for quilting knit fabrics with longarm quilting machines that use the 134 needle system.

Yes, size matters. The reason it matters, is that the groove (remember the groove, in the front) guides the thread to the eye and protects the thread as it passes through the layers of the quilt. Thread will pass through the sandwich multiple times before it forms a stitch. Remember, the hole created by the needle disappears after taking the quilt off the machine.
The thread has to lie IN the groove in order for it to be protected. If the needle is too small for the thread, the groove cannot do its job and you will get shredding and breakage. When the needle is too big for the thread, the thread wobbles around in the groove and although is is protected, it is not guided straight to the eye and you will get poorly formed stitches.
Choose size 16 needles for general quilting and average threads. They also work well with “invisible”, monofilament thread.
Choose size 18 needles for thicker threads or tightly woven fabrics such as some batiks. They also work well with metallics and decorative thread.
Choose size 20 needles for use with your thickest thread choices or when thicker thread causes skipped stitches.
